Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin. If you haven't heard of it you must be locked away in a basement somewhere. And, if you haven't heard of the books, you at least probably know about the HBO series based off of the books, which features more sex scenes in a single show than I'd care to admit watching.
The book itself is very detailed and follows some of the main characters, my favorite being Tyrion Lannister. He makes up for being looked down on (no pun intended) by his family with humor and wit. Each narrative is unique to the character which I think is impressive. As a writer I'd find it hard to create such a varied cast without some overlap. But, no two character is the same and each has his/her own story to tell with their own voice.
Martin describes his world well. Having watched the show first, I feel like I kind of cheated with the visuals. But still, there is nothing lacking in the Seven Kingdoms. When Catelyn Stark is at Eyrie, I could imagine everything. And in the beginning when the Others appear? It was like a moving playing in my head. And, also now a reason for me not to go adventuring out in some snowy woods. Zombies with kick-ass swords attacking me? No, thank you, I'll pass.
In the first book of the seven-part series (which will hopefully be completed), we're introduced the background of the Game of Thrones and how everything pretty much fell to hell in a handbasket after the death of King Robert.
Now, for those who haven't watched the show or read the book, what you need to know is that Joffrey is a little shit. Spoiled and just this side of being a sociopath, Joffrey is supposedly the king. But, that's all a lie. And, so now everyone is fighting for the throne. Which, when you look at it, doesn't look all that comfortable.
Martin has created an epic world, but keeps it organized and consistent. The character list is long, but the points of views are steady and show all of the politics and scandal of the story.
Due to some more sexual content, I wouldn't recommend this book to young readers. High school and older would be a good age group. Still, it is addictive, so starting in the midst of a busy semester is probably not the wisest choice. But, it may be the most entertaining way to procrastinate when you should be studying for that exam or writing your midterm paper.
